Micah Parsons became the newest member of the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night. Parsons was the top defensive player on the Cowboys’ board, according to Stephen Jones. The former Penn State star should help shore up the linebacker corps while also providing some much-needed pass-rushing juice.
Off-ball linebackers do not have as much value as other positions on the football field. That is especially true for off-ball linebackers that do not have much experience in coverage — as is the case with Parsons. That has raised some concerns about the Cowboys’ first-round decision.
That said, Micah Parsons has a chance to earn a big role in the Dallas Cowboys defense as soon as week one. Leighton Vander Esch has struggled to stay on the field, and Jaylon Smith has earned some scrutiny with his play. Keanu Neal was added to the roster this offseason on a one-year deal, but that should not stop Parsons from seeing a lot of action.
PARSONS IS EARLY FAVORITE FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Oddsmakers are well aware of that, too. Micah Parsons is the very early favorite to take home 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year honors as of Friday morning. Both DraftKings and BetOnline list Parsons at the top.

Parsons has the chance to make a big impact on the Dallas Cowboys defense. Dan Quinn and company will surely give him plenty of opportunities to play a lot of snaps as a rookie. The Cowboys defense desperately needs more team speed, and Parsons fits that to a T.
Washington defensive end Chase Young won the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after racking up 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. The Cowboys will utilize Parson as a pass rusher on third down situations, according to The Athletic‘s Jon Machota.
Therefore, Parsons will have opportunities to put up solid sack numbers and overall stats during his first year in the league. Parsons may not be the best bang for your buck bet considering he is the favorite, but the Cowboys’ first-rounder certainly has a chance to be in the race fo the award.
